Our Governing Body

Mrs M Carlton

Chair of Governors

Mr I Robertson

Length of time as a Governor: 5 years

Area of responsibility: Physical Education (PE)

Professional and Personal experiences:

This is my second opportunity to be a Governor having previously served at a school in Wigan before a job move brought my family to this area and I am really looking forward to taking an active role.

I currently work for a global organisation and am responsible for a manufacturing site within the chemical industry.  Previously I have worked mainly in the world of Healthcare, both in a technical role and within manufacturing.

I have three children at Bewley and am keen that they and all of the other children in the school will have the best opportunity to learn and progress and hope that my role as a Governor will help to support this.

Areas of special interest:
Having a scientific background I am keen to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (otherwise known as STEM) in schools and often support schools and colleges in activities related to these subjects within the North East.

My area of focus as a Governor will be Physical Education, an area that I feel is of importance to the health and welfare of children, especially as we live in an era where computer games and the internet mean less time spent outside.

Staff Governor

Mrs P Duncan (Deputy Headteacher)

Length of time as a Governor: 12 Years

Area of responsibility: Deputy Headteacher, Teaching & Learning Lead, Upper KS 2 Lead & Pastoral Care

Professional and Personal experiences:

I was appointed as Deputy Headteacher at Bewley Junior School in 2005 but when the school amalgamated with the Infant School, I became Deputy Headteacher for the new Primary School.

Previous to that I used to work in Middlesbrough as an advanced skills teacher for numeracy and literacy. Although I was based in a primary school and had class responsibility for 4 days a week, I worked in various other schools one day a week in an advisory role supporting different teachers by providing demonstration lessons and helping with planning and teaching.  I also supported the study support centre at the Riverside Stadium, working with underachieving boys, and planning English schemes of work around the topic of football. In addition to this, I worked closely with
the LEA advisors for maths writing a scheme of work for primary schools to use which would support the transition of students from Y6 to Y7.

Areas of special interest:
I am passionate about children’s learning and that they enjoy school; hopefully when they reflect back, they will remember their primary school days positively.  I strongly believe that, as teachers, we have duty to ensure that all children reach their full potential.

I enjoy the great outdoors and most weekends you will probably find me ‘on top of the world’ as I enjoy walking and climbing, the beautiful hills of Northern England, no matter what the weather. I recently climbed Cross Fell Pike, the highest point in The Pennines which was a combined hike and climb of approximately 23 miles taking me 10 hours!

Professional and Personal experiences:I have twin boys who are currently in Reception and at the start of their school life; I therefore felt it was a perfect time to become involved in the Governing Body. I look forward to making an effective contribution.

Professionally, I am a teacher and have been teaching since 2001 starting my career here at Bewley. Throughout my career I have taught across each key stage and I think this gives me a good insight into teaching and learning. I have been part of a school senior management team with responsibility for ICT, foundation subjects and promoting healthy living. Since, having my two boys I decided to change to a part-time working pattern. Now they are in school full-time this enables me to have time to dedicate to the Governing body where I hope to use my skills and experience to benefit Bewley.

Areas of Special Interest:

Having a background in teaching and as a parent I am keen to ensure that teaching and learning is key to progress.

My hobbies include amateur dramatics where I have played a number of roles in the past although since having twins my participation has reduced. I enjoy reading, travelling to European cities and Hastings where I come from!

Local Authority Governor

Revd. Richard Radley

Length of time as a Governor: 2 years

Area of responsibility: GDPR & Rights Respecting School Steering Group

Professional and Personal experiences:

Having been a parent governor many years ago in a primary school my children attended I knew one day I would like to take up this vital role again. During my time as a minister in Doncaster, between 2009 and 2015, I was on the Management Committee for what was then known as the Spring Board Unit of the Education system. This unit were involved with Secondary school age pupils who had bad attendance and attainment. I believe a good Primary School education can help children as they move to Secondary School and help them have a good footing for their future.

As a Church of England minister, and especially since moving to Billingham in April 2015, I have had many opportunities to be involved in the life of the local schools through assemblies and other events.Within the church environment for Billingham Team Parish, I am Senior Church Leader with responsibility for Families, so I oversee all the children and family work within the five Anglican Churches in Billingham and also involvement in Messy Church held in St. Aidan’s along with supervising the volunteer youth worker and other teams that are involved in children’s work.

have been a minister since 2004 having previously worked in Radio and Telecommunications. I am married to Jo and we have five children with ages ranging from 23 to 4 and a half.

Areas of Special Interest:

My wife and I have always had a passion for coming alongside families helping them with their un-ending role of bringing up children. We especially have a passion since 2011 for fostering and adoption and working with families at all levels. This experience is something I am keen to share with the school through my role as governor.

Parent Governor

Mrs Abigail Walker-Howarth

Length of time as a Governor: 1 year

Area of responsibility: Early Years

Professional and Personal experiences:

I became a governor when my eldest daughter started Reception. I wanted to find a way to invest myself in the school that would become such a central focus in our lives.

Myself and my husband run a well established commercial flooring business. Alongside the business I look after our 3 young children, my youngest has additional needs so life can be very busy. However, I enjoy finding the time to progress my knowledge in becoming an effective governor and hope my new skills will help the school and more importantly the pupils who are at the heart of all the decisions we make as governors.

My hobbies include writing, I try and find the time to write whenever I can, I write a parent blog which I’m passionate about. I also trained and work as a feeding coordinator in the local community. As a family we try to get away in our caravan and make the most of the holidays.

Co-opted Governor & Vice Chair

Mr Thomas Burke

Length of time as a Governor: 1 year

Area of responsibility: Link Governor for PE & Sports Premium

Professional and Personal experiences:

This is my second experience of being a governor having previously been a parent governor within another school in Stockton.

I have worked in education for nearly 15 years now and I also have graduated with a Certificate in Education. I am currently the Managing Director of Tom Burke Academy Limited and we work within primary schools across the North east of England. We have a PE Department, Music/Performing Arts Department and a Educational/Classroom Department. We at TBA LTD are assigned and have the challenge of Creating Future Stars Today.

I have two beautiful girls Brooke and Layla with another little girl due in August. My wife is also a primary school teacher.

My passion and ethos is that every child should be enabled to a safe, creative and exciting education and I firmly believe Bewley portray this and when I was approached to be part of the governing body I had no hesitation in accepting the position

I am hoping to bring to the governing body team my experience within Education having taught in vast amount of schools with all different diversities. However, I am mostly looking forward to bringing my business experience and am excited to help the school keep moving forward in the best and most efficient way possible.
